MIA CAS library, catalogues

For common searches in all parts of the library collection the Collective Catalogue of the MIA CAS Libraries is used (it includes the Library of the Archives of the CAS, the Library of the Masaryk Institute of the CAS, the historical T. G. Masaryk Library and the so-called T. G. Masaryk Professor Library). The individual catalogues of the sub-libraries are listed below. For the historical collection of the T. G. Masaryk Library, a guide for specialized searches and retrieval of the collection of old prints is included.

For internal users

For registered internal users (employees of the MIA CAS) the collections are available for viewing in the reading room. According to the library regulations, absentee or longer-term (grant) loans are also possible, depending on the type of collection.

For external users

For registered external users, ordered library items are available only for study in the MIA CAS reading room (during the opening hours of the reading room and after reservation of a seat). For operational reasons, orders must be placed at least three working days in advance (form on the library website) and wait for processing.

Sub-library catalogues

Library of the Archives of the CAS

The library has been continuously built since 1953, when the Archives of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences was established. It contains publications on Czech history, archives, history of science and codicology, and also includes the library of the former Cabinet for the Study of the Works of Zdeněk Nejedlý of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.

Library of the Masaryk Institute of the CAS

The library built since the establishment of the Masaryk Institute of the CAS in 1995. It offers contemporary book production thematically covering Czech and Central European history from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century.

T. G. Masaryk Library

The library of the original T. G. Masaryk Institute, founded in 1932. It contains part of Masaryk’s personal library and the library collection built up directly by the Institute until its dissolution in 1954.

T. G. Masaryk Professor Library

Part of Masaryk’s personal library, originally part of the library of the T. G. Masaryk Institute. In 1990 it was transferred from the abolished Institute of Marxism-Leninism of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia to Charles University, since 2017 it has been stored in the MIA CAS on the basis of a cooperation agreement.

Reading room


The reading room of the archive also serves as a study room of the library. In addition to requested loans, there is also a reference library.
