Regional cooperation partner: Muzeum T. G. M. Rakovník
The project uses various approaches to explore the personality of the half-forgotten painter Herbert Masaryk (1880–1915), whose untimely death is being commemorated. Herbert Masaryk left his mark not only as a promising painter, but also as a promoter of sport. Above all, he was the son of T. G. Masaryk, a philosopher, professor and politician. The analysis of Herbert Masaryk’s life will contribute to the definition of family relations in the Masaryk family and in the academic family in general.
The main results of the project include an exhibition entitled Herbert Masaryk. Artist, sportsman and son, which will be held at the T. G. Masaryk Museum in Lány in 2025 and then transferred to the Museum of Czech Culture in Slovakia (SNM) in Martin, Slovakia. The exhibition will feature paintings from private and public collections, as well as archival material. It will include unique documents, many of which will be seen by the public for the first time. The exhibition will be accompanied by an educational lecture programme for schools. The following year, a conference will be held at the GASK in Kutná Hora, where historians and experts in the history of art and sport will examine the personality of Herbert Masaryk, his family and his times. In 2027, we will publish a book containing the conference papers and a critical edition of documents from the collections of the MIA CAS, which relate in particular to the personality of Herbert Masaryk. The target audience of all the results is the historical community and the wider public, those interested in the visual arts and the life of Herbert Masaryk and his family.
