Rationed Life. Science, Everyday Life, and Working-Class Politics in the Bohemian Lands, 1914–1918

Laureát prémie O. Wichterleho za rok 2015 Dr. phil. Rudolf Kučera, Ph.D., z Masarykova ústavu a Archivu AV ČR zaznamenal významný úspěch – jeho monografie Život na příděl. Válečná každodennost a politiky dělnické třídy v českých zemích 1914-1918 zaujala prestižní americké nakladatelství Berghahn, které v dubnu 2016 publikovalo její rozšířenou a přepracovanou verzi. Kučerova kniha vyšla v ČR před třemi lety a byla časopisem Dějiny a Současnost vyhlášena jako nejlepší českojazyčná historická práce roku 2013. Jedná se o fascinující studii sociálních dějin počátku 20. století.

Daleko za frontami první světové války se v továrnách válečného průmyslu lopotily stovky tisíc dělníků, kterým rozsáhlý konflikt od základu převrátil jejich životy. Muži, ženy i děti v továrnách museli čelit zcela novým formám materiálního nedostatku, který převracel dosavadní společenské vazby a dával naprosto nové významy i nejobyčejnějším činnostem všedního dne, jako např. kdy, kde, co a s kým jíst. Tato kniha rekonstruuje zkušenost českých dělníků během první světové války na čtyřech základních úrovních, a sice na úrovni konzumace potravin, fyzické práce, genderu a sociálního a politického protestu.

Far from the battlefront, hundreds of thousands of workers toiled in Bohemian factories over the course of World War I, and their lives were inescapably shaped by the conflict. In particular, they faced new and dramatic forms of material hardship that strained social ties and placed in sharp relief the most mundane aspects of daily life, such as when, what, and with whom to eat. This study reconstructs the experience of the Bohemian working class during the Great War through explorations of four basic spheres—food, labor, gender, and protest—that comprise a fascinating case study in early twentieth-century social history.
